‘Dashakriya’ is a saga of Bhanudas, a schoolboy. Struggling with abject poverty, using his wits to survive and pull his family out of its miserable living conditions, his story expands to include in its scope the deterioration of faith due to diseased traditions, the horrifying caste system, the abominable and yet pathetic options of making ends meet, the breakdown of family, the bizarre circumstances that bring groups on opposite ends of the social spectrum at the same point, the people that turn their back on modernism, financial compulsions that change interpersonal connections, a rethink on death and religion… all in a town that once sparkled proudly in its golden history but since then has become a record of a painful present.
Author-publisher Baba Bhand’s style is impartial and matter-of-fact. He stays away from saccharine-sweet poeticism and the language that he uses is straight from the heart of the region the story unfolds in. The remarkably vivid descriptions, the deep contemplation that the subject brings with it, and a very clear position that the author takes, make this book stand out significantly from the works of his contemporaries.
The book is also remarkable because despite its subject and the treatment, it appeals to every age group – from young adults to the seniors. ‘Dashakriya’ reflects upon life, the disturbing deterioration that can accompany it, and the stream of compassion that flows with it throughout. That is what makes this work so valuable. – Chandrakant Patil
